I Have A Physician Confirmed Allergic Reaction To Cipro .

Question: I have a physician confirmed allergic reaction to Cipro. I had taken it at least 2 times in the past for UTI with no reaction, so I was not hesitant in taking it again. After about 2 days of rx, I developed edema and increased peripheral neuropathy. I had my suspicions confirmed that it was just not my PN occurring at an accelerating speed when I visited the PA at my pain clinic. nothing was discussed concerning long term reactions. It has been about 7 weeks since I had initial symptoms and my edema is under control, but symptoms of increased PN including leg pain remain. Will this reverse? What can I do to reverse it. I hv appointment at pain clinic, but do not expect they will hv solutions. I also hv a neuro stim that is not working effectively, not necessarily from the Cipro as it has been a problem for about 6 months and I hv to keep it at a low setting and take tizanidine to decrease what had been my normal pain from PN. Question is whether the increased PN pain brought on by the cipro is reversible. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Most of the cases recover from ciprofloxacin induced neuropathy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query.

It is true that fluoroquinolones including ciprofloxacin may induce peripheral neuropathy.

Most of the cases recover from symptoms but it may take several months.

It is necessary to evaluate the folate levels in the blood if low then supplementation is necessary.

Pregabalin also may be used for the symptoms until recovery.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
