Question: I have PCOS and I really never have a period without the help of provera. It's been a little over a year since my last cycle so I am not used to pms symptoms what so ever. The past few days I have been bloated and tired and today I started it. However, starting last night, I have been retaining so much water its uncomfortable to breathe deep, and even my face is swollen. Is this a normal pms symptom?

Hello!

Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service!

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms are not typical of Provera's adverse effects.

Fluid retention is a common adverse effect, but so much swelling and troubles with breathing in such a short period of time are not really common and could be indicative of a possible allergic reaction or intolerance.

For this reason, if this situation persists, I recommend going to the ER for a physical exam and some tests:

- complete blood count
- kidney and liver function tests
- blood electrolytes.

In the meantime, it is necessary to closely monitor your blood pressure values.

Hope you will find this information helpful!
