Question: I developed an shingles type rash on my hip and shins and breasts after having the flu in February. I was treated for shingles and an allergic reaction and have done 3 courses of anti-viral meds, prednisone and benadryl along with calamine lotion. I am 55 years old and am worried that I have something autoimmune since it gets better but never goes away. Can you help? I have also used anti-fungal creams.

Brief Answer:
More information and a photo are needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I see through your query that you have already taken several medications for the rash.
Can you send me a photo of the rash to evaluate better?
Some other information that I need to know are:
-Is the rash itchy?
-Is there something that aggravates the symptoms?
-Does any of the medications that you have tried relief the symptoms?

Waiting for your response.
Thanks

Yes the rash is itchy and aggravated when I am hot or sweaty. It is raised and weeps when I scratch it. I have a picture but I don't know how to send it.

Brief Answer:
Probably autoimmune disorder, follow the advice below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

I have already reviewed the attached photo.
Your symptoms can be related to an autoimmune disorder.
One of the most common autoimmune disorders with blisters is dermatitis herpetiform.

I suggest you the following examinations to confirm the diagnosis:
-a complete blood count
-a biopsy of the blisters
-Immunofluorescence of the skin to detect for antibodies
The last examinations should be done at a doctor's office.
After the examinations you can contact me again for further evaluation and treatment.

Take care,
Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi
