Question: I am on warfarin. I’ve been on warfarin and baby aspirin for 13yrs from having a aneurism to my brain and a Dvt in my left leg. I’m also anemic. But only as of lately My doctor found out that my iron and b12 levels was low, so he put me on iron 200mg, folic acid 1mg, and b12 2500mcg. This seems to help with my low energy but 3 weeks after taking these meds, I started having severe heart palpitations and it happens at anything.. It started getting so bad that I thought I would passed out or died and it only use to stop after taking a baby aspirin when I had these attacks. I went back to my doctor, he did some labs and even though I was having these scary heart palpitations, he still wanted me to take them and he also prescribed me metoprolol 25mg to help slow my heart beat down. But that didn’t work. After 2 weeks of taking it, It made my body felt tensed up, my right arm and leg felt like It was losing power and like I was about to have a stroke. So I stopped taking all the tablets he prescribed for me. I’ve been off them for about 3 weeks now. Although I’m still having the heart palpitations, it’s not as bad as they were when I was on the iron, b12, folic acid and metoprolol tablets. I can control my breathing to calm myself down. My question is, why do you think this heart palpitation happen? Can it be that the dosage Of iron or b12 was too high being that I take warfarin? I was having my INR checked regularly and it was always between 2.4 or 3. I don’t know what’s happening to my body but I feel like I’m losing myself, I am 34 years old, I’m a happy person, but as of lately I don’t know what to do or who else doctor to see?

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service!

I passed carefully through your concern and would explain that you are right that taking iron compounds may give a lot of unpleasant feelings like distended abdomen as well as palpitations.

On the other side also anemia may provide similar complaints.

I think that when it comes to antithrombotic therapy you should be prudent and follow your doctor recommendations in order to prevent serious complications.

I would recommend discussing with your doctor on the opportunity of performing also a cardiac ultrasound test and thyroid hormones level.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further questions feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards
