How To Get Rid Of Meth Addiction During Breast Feeding?

default
Posted on Tue, 31 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, My name is XXXXXXX I have a 2 month & 9 day old infant. He is my first child and only child for now. He is also the love of my life. But you probably would say or think otherwise/ the complete opposite once I tell you what I've done. :'( please, help me. So on Friday night about 11 or around then but defiantly before 12 I smoked meth. It was the most stupidest thing to ever do and I stayed up all night crying because I normally breastfeed my son but since I smoked on Friday, I have been giving him formula similac sensitive. I wish I knew how much I smoked then but i just simply cannot tell you. I'd give it my best shot and say maybe a (dime$10) bucks worth and then I also snorted it too, no more than $20 bucks worth. And so that was on Friday from 11pm- like 12/12:40am? Then I bought a 20$ But idk if it was approximately worth $20 bucks because idk the measurements but it was a. Decent size. On Sunday which was yesterday, I snorted that and used to smoke with foil twice then gave up with foil and snorted it. I finished the amount throughout Sunday from 2pm-4pm? I had breaks.
Ugh I'm so stupid!! When I look into my newborns eyes and see him sleep it kills me inside. I really really will never do this again. Please I want to bond with my son and breastfeeding did that.

Brief Answer:
It's good that you have realized, stop breast feeding for next one week

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

It is good that you have realized what you have done.It is even better that you have stopped breast feeding after intake of meth.
But this is not the solution. You have to quit this habit. You are a mother and you have to take all the responsibilities of motherhood. You also know a mother is not only for the feeding of the baby. Breast feeding is ideal for a baby and formula feed poorly impact the cognitive development and growth of the baby. So continuing the drug and not to breast feeding is a very bad alternative.
Pregnancy and lactation period is the best time for deaddiction,as you have a strong motive to quit. The rearing of baby also get affected as a mother loss her senses after consumption of drugs. The amount of drug intake and its relation to transfer in breast milk has not been analysed properly yet. According to various studies any amount of drug intake can get transferred to the milk and any amount of intake by an infant may be deleterious.

So I would suggest you to rather than feeling guilty take a strong decision of not to consume any kind of social drugs. It has been recommended to not to breast feed at least 72 hours of drug intake.Better you stop the feed for next one week.

I hope my this suggestion will impact you strongly.
My well wishes are with you.
I will be glad to answer if you have any further query.

Hi doctor,
This brings great sorrow to my mind. I am so ashamed. I take full responsibily for my action. In the meantime, the 72 hours- i will continue to pump that way by the time the 72 hours wares off. I will have my milk supply going for him. I did order these pills that are natural and got 5 star reviews to help milk flow. If they come in the mail today can i take them? I do not like my child on formula but i have to suck it up. My biggest fear is having him die or take him away from me because of this huge mistake. I will keep my promise to him.

Brief Answer:
Blood level of methylamphetamine reaches almost to nil level by 72 hours

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Welcome again

Various research studies have shown that after consumption of meth,it usually clears from the blood after 72 hours. But to be on safer side discontinue the breast feeding for next one week.
Till that time express the breast milk manually or with the help of pump and discard that. This will help in continuous production of milk and prevent engorgement and pain in breast.
There are various kind of medications available in the market to enhance milk production. It would be easy for me to answer if you mention the name of the medicine.
Better option is to avoid all medication until there is real decrease in production of milk. Don't be anxious as anxiety itself may hamper milk production.
Don't afraid and stop thinking negative as if you discontinue the breast milk for one week and then restart it won't cause harm to the baby.
Keep your promise.

Regards

Hi.
The milk pills i bought are called "Milkies nursing blend". So what youre telling me, i think, is to continue pumping & then dump for the next 2 days reaching the 72 hours. & to be extra safe, continue doing that for another day or two. Im just anxious to get him back on the boob. If i drink tons of water do you think by the 72 hour i can try to feed? what else would you reccomened? Like does cranberry juice work?

Brief Answer:
Avoid using milk pills, continue pumping and discarding

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Be patience XXXXXXX I have already mentioned although the exact toxicity caused by feeding the infant by a mother who has consumed meth has not been found,as there are no large studies. From the reports available it is clear that one should avoid feeding for 72 hours. But metabolism of each individual is different. So I suggested you to discontinue the milk for next one week.If you feel comfortable you can start it after 72-96 hours.

Till then just pump and discard the milk. I assure you your flow will continue and it is not going to decrease after discontinuing the feeding for such short period. The nature of these milk pills are not very well described. So I would suggest you to avoid these pills. And actually you don't need these pills. Pills are recommended for those who have decreased/minimal/nil production.

Be patience, keep your promise and feel confident.

Brief Answer:
You can take the milk pills

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Frankly speaking I had no idea about the milk pills you mentioned.I went through the internet and found that many person have used this. The reviews are also good. The nature and content of the pill is not mentioned clearly. We pediatrician usually prescribe metoclopramide or domperidone tablets to enhance the production of milk if there is no underlying hormonal abnormality.

Its good that you are taking plenty of fluids. You can take those herbal milk pills. You can also start metocloprmide or domperidone under physician supervision.

Don't be anxious.
You can ask me further queries if any.

Brief Answer:
Start metoclopramide and milking nursing blend pil

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

My humble request to you, don't get anxious. It appears that anxiety is the main reason of decreased milk production.
Take lesson from this event and never use drugs. It gives short term gain with long term harm.
I assure you everything will be fine, just be calm.
Take plenty of fluids, start metoclopramide and the milk pill which you have bought.Continue pumping.
Play with your baby, divert your attention, indulge yourself into some activities.
Although I am councelling and helping you, this is not to promote drug abuse.

Wish you all luck XXXXXXX
