Question: Hi . I’ve had anxiety and exercise intolerance my whole life. I get out of breath quickly when I jog/run . Walking or hiking is fine. I’ve had many ecg in my life. They all come back normal but some doctors have said my left ventricle is thickened but normal. One doctor said it looked like athletes heart, but I’m not an athlete at all .I’m 32 now but i was told the same thing when I was 24. I did have high bp 145/95 , 160/100 when stressed. I’m on propranol 40mg twice a day for that and anxiety .Doctors tell me it’s diet and stress. My main question is would HCM show up on ecg if I had it? Sometimes I’m afraid to exercise because I think I will have a heart attack. On ecg is there a big difference between HCM and normal thickening ?

Detailed Answer:
Hello

After going through the medical details provided by you I can understand your concern for your health and well being and I would like to tell you that yes there are findings in ECG that are quite suggestive of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) like increased volatage of qrs complexes, STT changes, t wave abnormalities etc.

However HCM diagnosis can only be confirmed with the help of echocardiography which make direct visualisation of the cardiac muscle thickness possible.

So I would like to suggest you to kindly upload the clear image of your latest ecg and also get an echocardiogram done for proper evaluation.

I hope this information will guide you properly.

Kind Regards
