Question: Hello. Since i last wrote in, I had some blood work done (including STDs). Everytging came back %E2%80%9Cnormal%E2%80%9D or %E2%80%9Cnegative.%E2%80%9D However, on thing was flagged as high: my lymphs (absolute) is 3.8. Is this indicative of anything? i am still plaugued by constant headaches, mild dizziness, fullness in the ears and nausea (feeling like I%E2%80%99ve been kicked in the stomach)

My medications: synthroid (88 MCG), allegra, ranitidine, allegra (as needed), truvada (1 year, 6 months), weekly allergy shots

Brief Answer:
Lymphocytes in your case are very mildly elevated- a viral infection is likely

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and also checked the uploaded lab report.
As can be noticed, your absolute lymphocyte count is 3.8 while it should not be higher than 3. So, there is a mild elevation in the number of lymphocytes compared to the normal range.

Lymphocytes are white blood cells that are important in fighting viral infections such as common cold (the most common one) MNI (mononucleosis), CMV (cytomegalovirus), and also more important vial infections such as hepatitis, HIV, etc. Lymphocytes are also important in fighting chronic infections and conditions such as tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune diseases and also tumors.
So, lymphocytes may raise in number any time one of the above conditions is present.

In your case, because the increase in the absolute value of the lymphocytes is mild very likely this is due to a viral infection that you may be going through.
I would recommend you to repeat the test in 2-3 weeks and see if the value goes down, remains the same or raises. It is expected with self-limited infections, that the lymphocytes will go to the normal range in 2-3 weeks. If this happens, than you are reassured.

If the lymphocytes do not go to the normal level in 2-3 weeks, it still can be a self-limiting infection and nothing worrisome but the doctor may need to do a good examination in you to check for lymph nodes, to check your liver and spleen, your heart, lungs, throat, skin, etc.
Rarely other tests will be needed, depending on the findings of the physical exam with the doctor.

To conclude:
- the absolute count of the lymphocytes in your case is mildly increased and does not seem to be worrisome
- the most likely cause is a viral infection which is the most common cause, especially with such a mild increase
- you may check your lymphocyte count in 2-3 weeks and see if they go back to the normal range
- if they do not return to the normal range, this can still be a self-limiting and not worrisome condition causing it but it may be best to have a thorough visit with the doctor to rule out other possible and rare causes mentioned able
- another factor to consider is that lymphocytes are important during allergic reactions, so the allergy shots you are receiving may also be contributing to this mild increase of lymphocytes and may be considered the cause if lymphocytes remain high and the physical exam is normal.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
