Question: Hello !

My wife mother have Hypothyroidism – but my wife dont have !
She is checking TSH regulary, she is healthy sport active woman !

My mistake a was reading in google things about Hypothyroidism and i found one article about that Autoimmune Thyroid Disease could increase risk of getting outher autoimmune disease !
As you know reading too much can make you stress

This is this publication
https://sci-hub.tw/10.1016/j.amjmed.2009.06.030

I m mathematical smart and understand that in this publicaton there are lot of important limitations
1. As for example you take one groupe with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis look statistic how much are affected with other autoimune disease and compare it with other genaration that is very huge groupe
Like you compare 400 people with 1 000 000, statisticaly % of corse in 400 groupe will be more some autoimune diseas !

As they in this publication compare 400 groupe with general population

And as they say that there is limitations:
There are some limitations. The calculation of relative risks was limited by a relative paucity of contemporary population prevalence data for the United Kingdom,
https://sci-hub.tw/10.1016/j.amjmed.2009.06.030

As they in this publication compare 400 groupe with general population – that is no corect
Given the strikingly increased relative risks for other autoimmune diseases compared with the general UK population, as well as the nonspecific symptoms and thus well-documented frequent delay in diagnosis of these disorders
https://sci-hub.tw/10.1016/j.amjmed.2009.06.030
I undrestand that Hypothyroidism that have inflence with othere genes could have inflence with other autimmune disease ! But this statistic would be much less if you take huge group like 100 000 with Hypothyroidism and compare it with other 100 000 !

So if my wife get Hypothyroidism it does not mean that she would get also rheamotide arthritis ? As there are other genes that would increse risk !
Of course i undrestand ther is posibility, but still it not so huge !?

Than you very much

Brief Answer:
About autoimmune diseases:

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
Patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis, has a higher predisposition for other autoimmune diseases than the normal population, it is true.
There are many studies that confirm it and we see it practically. Type 1 Diabetes, vitiligo adrenal insuficiency are the most common pathologies and they usually appear during the first 30 years of life.
Of course, the probability to have a second autoimmune disease is low, but slighlty elevated when compared to patients that do not have Hashimoto thyroiditis.
I would say there is no need to worry, as she does not have Hashimoto thyroiditis yet!
Studies talk about statistics, probabilities not events that will happen for sure!
Hope the information will help.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta Guni

Thank you for your answer !

It helps to understand things better -
It is better to ask you question than to read google - as again information not correctly, and not correct publications could case yo more stress

There is written that rheumatoid arthritis can cause also Hypothyroidism

But there is very few info about can Hypothyroidism cause rheumatoid arthritis

is there some association with Hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis ?
(it could be but i think risk is small)

as there is only one study that i found - and i think lot of these auto immune disease could go in another direction than you first get one autoimmune disease and then Hypothyroidism

as in this study autoimmune disease in Hypothyroidism was self-reported

please look for quick this publication as professional you will find more limitations - and explain to me that Hypothyroidism and other autoimmune disease is not so high when first disease is Hypothyroidism

https://sci-hub.tw/10.1016/j.amjmed.2009.06.030

(as you as professional said that there is Type 1 Diabetes - more associated with Hypothyroidism) but incidence is to so high

You will help me to avoid stress and reading too much !

Thank you very much !!

Brief Answer:
about autoimmune diseases;

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Neither Hashimoto thyroiditis causes other autoimmune diseases, nor rheumatoid arhtritis causes Hashimoto.
There is a genetic predisposition for different autoimmune pathologies during the life, even though the probability is low, but is higher than in normal population.
Hashimoto thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, that means that the body produces antibodies that destroys the thyroid gland.
When more than 80% of the gland is destroyed by these antibodies, the thyroid produces less hormones, causing hypothyroidism.
So, before causing hypothyroidism, the autoimmune disease is present for severeal years there and is manifester only with high antibodies, that is why it is not diagnosed in most of the cases in this phase.
Hope the information will help.

Dr.Mirjeta guni

Thank you !!

So it means that in people who have genetic for Hashimoto thyroiditis could have some genes that are related to other autoimmune disease - but as you said possibility is low, but is higher than in normal population.

So if you get Hashimoto thyroiditis possibility to get other autoimmune disease is rather low !

So you don't take to much stress !

Thank you very much for help!

I did small research in internet - and it is said that autoimmune thyroiditis
as we discused increase risk of other autoimmune disease !

And it is said in literature

https://www.benaroyaresearch.org/blog/post/mystery-multiple-autoimmune-diseases#

https://www.healio.com/news/rheumatology/0000/when-autoimmune-disease-strikes-thrice-managing-multiple-autoimmune-syndrome

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC0000/

But as you said it it could be little higher than in general population !

How much risk is increase 2 times 3 times ?

As i understand if the group is large the statistic risk is smaller like 1.5 - 2 times

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/0000

So basically as from different study and like this
https://sci-hub.se/10.1016/j.amjmed.2009.06.030

And from others and your answers i understand that risk is increased 1.5 - 3 times !
But still it is rather low is it so ?

Thank you very much

About autoimmune diseases:

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
The presence of autoimmune thyroiditis increases the risk for other autoimmune diseases, yes! But they are not caused by thyroiditis.
No.one can say the exact number, 1, 2 or 3 fold more risk.
But the idea is that the risk is higher in this group and once they have symptoms suggestive for other autoimmune diseases they should inform they physician.
Hope the information will help.
