Have Had Reoccurring Lower Back Bruise. What Could It Be?

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Nov 2012
Question: My 16 year old daughter has had recurring unexplained lower back bruising this year. She is in getting xrays now. There is no apparent cause for this painful bruising on her lower back, it is in the area of her kidneys. This is the 3rd time this year she has presented with this symptom. What could it be? What tests should be run besides for an Xray?

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
We need to rule out any serious conditions such as blood coagulation disorders.
Please answer the following questions to allow me to help you better:
a. Is it present on any other body part, especially the joints?

So to start with, we need a Prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and a platelet count. We would also need an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis to rule out an issue in the gastrointestinal tract and pelvis.
There is a rare entity described called as Painful bruising syndrome is an idiopathic trauma-induced condition seen in young to middle-aged women. However before making any final diagnosis need to do a thorough work up including blood tests to rule out coagulation disorders, Xrays and Ultrasound.
It would be great if you could describe her symptoms in greater detail.
