Does Prostatitis Cause High PSA Levels?

Question: Ten years ago I had a biopsy. It was negative. The urologist said I had BPH. I have also had prostatitis. I have been on Flomax ever since. I have been getting DRE's for many years. They are negative. But this week my family doctor felt my prostate and said it was assymetrical. My PSA is 9. I am going to a urologist on Monday. SHould I get another biopsy? Could this high PSA be caused by prostatitis?

Many years ago I had a UTI. Had fever. Went to hospital. Dr. gave me a PSA. It was 21. Given antibiotics. Went down to a PSA of 4, then again to 3.1. My PSA never goes below 3.1. Haven't taken a PSA in many years, just have the DRE

Thanks for your query,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your serum PSA has raised to 9 very recently .

Assuming that you do not have fever suggesting Prostatitis I would state that there is a standard rule that raised PSA is suspected to be due to cancer of the prostate unless proved otherwise by biopsy .

Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) is not definitive in diagnosis of cancer prostate .

Please consult your Urologist and get Ultrasound Guided Multicore Biopsy of the prostate done to confirm the diagnosis,
