Does One Time Ingestion Of Plastic Toxins Cause Danger To Health?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Jun 2014
Question: Yesterday I heated a honey bottle (plastic) in a microwave and put the honey in a soda - to help with a hypoglycemic (insulin) reaction. Today I noticed the bottle was partially melted - bottle stands up like leaning tower of Pisa. How dangerous? did I poison myself - should I do anything about it?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to panic. One time minute exposure. No harm

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to address your query.

Dioxin is a chemical which is found commonly in plastic and is released when it is heated.Ingestion of this chemical over prolonged periods repeatedly (high levels) is harmful to health since it gets deposited in the fat tissue and causes infertility and cancer.

Single exposure will not have ill effects on your health since the level of exposure is very less - minute amounts even if you had absorbed all the contents. I presume that the bottle has not melted and is intact, though deformed. This does not have a specific antidote and nothing needs to be done.

Do not use the same bottle again. Please make sure that you avoid microwaving food stored in plastic vessels. Hope this answers your query. Nothing to panic.

Thank You Dr. XXXXXXX That's the reassurance i was looking for. I was feeling funny yesterday and began to attribute it to the incident I outlined. When I gave it some thought I too realized that the way I was feeling probably had nothing to do with the slightly melted plastic bottle.

Thansk again! All the best!
