Question: MY SON HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH BIPOLAR, WHEN HE WAS ON LITHIUM 7 YRS. OR SO AGO, HE DID FINE WITH IT UNTIL HE GOT CANCER AND HAD TO HAVE CHEMO. THE CANCER DR. AND HIS FAMILY DR. DID NOT DO LEVEL LIKE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO AND THE LITHIUM LEVEL WAS TOO HIGH AND HE HAD KIDNEY DIAYLISIS FOR ABOUT 2 DAYS, NOW HE HAS BEEN CANCER FREE FOR 7 YRS. AND HIS FAMILY DR. HAS HIM ON WELBRUTIN BUT IT DOES NOT SEEM TO HELP HIM MUCH. DO YOU THINK HE COULD GO BACK ON LITHIUM OR LUTUDA WITH REGULAR LEVELS CHECKED

Lithium cannot be safely prescribed in people with active kidney failure or dialysis.

However, Latuda would be a safe and effective mood stabilizer in this case. I highly recommended this medication in place of lithium.
