Posted on Wed, 2 Jul 2014
Question: I have been diagnosed with Blepharoconjunctivitis. I used to wear contact lenses, when this medical condition occured 3 years ago. I know that I did not clean my contact lenses properly. Could dirty contact lenses cause this problem?

Thank you!

Contact lenses are known to cause this problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to health care magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

It seems from the history that you are diagnosed with blepharoconjunctivitis.
Use of contact lenses can cause this problem .
Contact lenses when used for long time are known to cause allergic reaction of conjunctiva causing blepharoconjunctivitis.
Hence contact lenses irrespective of they are dirty or not when used for long time are known to cause this problem.

Hope I have answered your question.

Thank you

When you say "used for a long time" do you mean over a period of years, etc? Or do you mean that when they are used for too long each day that they can cause this problem?

What treatment would you recommend?

Brief Answer:
Both will cause this problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to health care magic

Thank you for the follow up.

Wearing contact lenses for long time will lead to chronic allergic conjunctivitis, whereas wearing of contact lenses for long hours during a day will lead to exaggeration of allergic symptoms and cause early onset of allergy.
Hence wearing contact lenses for long time and wearing of lenses for long hours during a single day, both are associated with allergy.

The treatment is by
Use of anti allergic eye drops and discontinuing the use of contact lenses till symptoms are relieved.

This can be prevented by
Judicious use of contact lenses, by preventing overuse of contact lenses.
Avoiding sleeping with use of contact lenses.
Changing to new set of contact lenses at regular intervals.

Hope the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
