Does Methylphenidate Have Long Term Side Effects?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Jan 2017
Question: My grandson, who was 7 on Dec 22 was started on Methylphenidate ER about 9 months ago. His dosage was recently increased to 27 milligrams. While he does seem to have improved ability in regards to improved focus and improved impulse control while on this medication, I am concerned regarding long term side effects and dependence. He is advanced in his math and reading skills and is social and engaged with others around him. Another concern is that this medication is not always being given consistently. Any insight or advise you may be able to give?

Brief Answer:
Methylphenidate is unlikely to cause dependency

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I understand your concern.

Your doctor has been right in prescribing in Methylphenidate as your grand child is above 6 years now.

Coming to your queries -

1. The drug is unlikely to cause dependency.

2. Regarding missing of doses - it is not advisable. Let him take the missed dose as soon as he or you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is later than 6:00 p.m. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

3. Long term side effects may include - feeling nervous or irritable, sleep problems (insomnia); loss of appetite; nausea, stomach pain; or headache.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
