Posted on Fri, 7 Nov 2014
Question: My son has been on Invega for 2 years and in the last month has come down with tardive dyskinesia, I would like to just stop the medication since it is what is causing it. The doctor says to tapper it down and have him off in a month. The more I read it says the longer he is on the med he greater chance of his being permanent. I would like to just stop medication , looking for a 2nd opinion.

Brief Answer:
Would agree with your view point.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your son's diagnosis, medications and his current symptoms.

I agree that the tardive dyskinesia is most likely caused by the drug Invega (paliperidone). So, it is better to stop it as quickly as possible. The longer we continue it, the more severe the tardive dyskinesia nay become. Moreover, it may also be come irreversible, if continued for long.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Would you be afraid of tardive Dyskinesis getting worse removing it so quickly or is it worse keeping him on the drug that's causing this? He has had these symptoms for less then a month but just got diagnosed. What is your feeling of him getting better and fully recovering? I'm giving vitamin e supplements as read can help anything else?

Brief Answer:
He would get better.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

His tardive dyskinesia would not get worse after removing the drug quickly.

The only reasons for trying to taper it gradually usually are- fear of psychiatric symptoms getting worse and rarely seizures. But I do not expect any of these two in your son's case.

He would definitely improve, as the symptoms started only recently.

Continue vitamin E supplements.

Best wishes,
