Does Cymbalta Interact With Paxil?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jun 2016
Question: I have been taking Paxil for 14 years for depression and anxiety. 10 mg for many years increased to 20 when I retired and following a series of very bad episodes with my father where self-esteem was flushed in the toilet. 6 months later, January 2015, it was increased to 30 mg following the death of my beautiful daughter from ovarian cancer.
In February of this year I spiralled down a deep hole and thought my Paxil was not working anymore. My doctor prescribed Cymbalta.
Reduced Paxil to 20mg and started the 30mg of Cymbalta. Was flying high and much to my XXXXXXX the underlying fibromyalgia pain I’ve had for over 10 years disappeared. I still have not experienced a flare up. However I was desensitized emotionally and couldn’t even cry the loss of my child.
Then 10mg Paxil with 30mg Cymbalta. All was good.
5mg Paxil with 30mg Cymbalta. Still ok somewhat.
2.5mg Paxil, 30mg Cymbalta. Humm… I don’t know, anger creeping up however the sausage fingers and feet I’ve had from the beginning of Paxil have significantly reduced.
0 Paxil, 60mg Cymbalta 2 weeks ago. I hate the way I feel. All that anger inside I’ve had for as long as I can remember came back. I am snippy at everyone, impatient inside and out and cry for my daughter constantly.
The internet is not keen on mixing Paxil with Cymbalta and I’m at a loss of what to do next.
Prior to discovering that Paxil worked on me, I had tried Wellbutrin, Effexor, Buspar and a couple of others, none of which worked.
In your experience, do you have any suggestions as what I can do moving forward and discussing with my doctor? My biggest issue right now is the anger and impatience I have, it is ruining my life and my relationships with those I love so dearly.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
low dose of paxil or sertraline, or benzodiazepine

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern.

It is absolutely clear that your problem is due to stopping the paxil.

Yes there are some drug interaction between paxil and cymbalta but this is not the case always. You were stable with 5-10 mg dose of paxil. I suggest restarting paxil with 2.5 mg dose and gradually increasing the dose until you improve completely or any side effect. In case paxil cause side effect one can try with sertraline (zoloft).

Other option is adding drug from benzodiazepine group which will treat your anxiety and stress and control your symptoms. I recommend klonopin.

You can discuss these recommendations to your treating doctor and modify the treatment.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
