Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: i'm having some pretty bad pain in my lower back on the left side for about two weeks. I fist noticed it about a month ago. It's been increasing with intensity the last couple days.
It's sharp and comes and goes sporadically....i'm wondering how to tell if its kidney related and if theres anything i can do to relieve the pain. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It may be kidney pain or spine disc pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such pain can be caused by kidney inflammation, kidney stones or spine disc problem.
Kidney pain usually appears with lower abdominal pain, frequent urinating or burning while urinating. Kidney pain tends to radiate to groin or even leg. You may try to knock in the kidney area. If the pain will get more intense, kidney it is.

Spine disc problem can also give back pain. It gets more intense after physical activity. It tends to radiate to buttock or even leg.

For kidney pain, you should take Metamizole or Buscolisine (or both). Antibiotic should be prescribed (like Ciprofloxacine 500 mgs twice a day). Cranberries supplementation should be started.

Spine pain can be eased with Ibuprophen, Diclophenac or simila NSAID (non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug). Hot bath should help in both types of pain.

For kidney diagnostics, urine analysis and abdominal ultrasound should be done.

For spine diagnostics, MRI should be done.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
