Can Hiatal Hernia Cause Panic Attack And Depression?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Oct 2015
Question: Hello

I have had problems with small/medium hiatal hernia for a few years; and I started taking good medication(cipralex) 3 years ago that keeps this problem away most of the time. I also have had problems with panic for a few years and I started taking citalopram 10mg to help me with these; and this 10mg keeps the panic away; I have taken those for 3 years now and just now I started to withdraw this medication slowly; and in only 2 weeks my heartburn has started to grow and be unstable again.
Some people think that panic attacks and depression somehow is connected to my hiatal hernia and reflux; and if this is true is it stupid to even thinkin' of stopping this citalopram medicine ?.

the only thing Im afraid of is; if the citalopram will destroy my body; in the long term; or is 10mg safe to take as long as I want ?

ANYWAY; Im in good physical health and I only want the best for my body; that can keep me happy.

Brief Answer:
Escitalopram in long term if taken in dose of 10mg/day is safe

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am Dr.Amit Jain. Side effects of escitalopram have been reported to be generally mild and transient. They are most common during the first 2 weeks of treatment and decrease in intensity and frequency with continued treatment. The overall incidence of rates of side effects in trials with patients treated with escitalopram 10 mg per day (66%) was similar to placebo-treated patients (61%); the incidence rate in the group treated with escitalopram 20 mg per day was greater (86%).So 10mg/day of escitalopram even taken for a long time is considered to be safe. If you have any further query I will be happy to answer that too. Wish you a good health
