Can Eating Bananas Cause Black Specs In Stool?

Question: Can Bananas cause black specs in stool? I have always eaten bananas all my life, but never regularly like I have been now (consistently 1 or maybe 2 a day). I have been on a high pH diet for about two weeks due to LPR (silent reflux). My diet has changed a lot, and with that, the appearance of my BM (which would seem to make sense). I am eating a lot of green veggies and lean protein. However, I have noticed these small, black specs when I clean myself for the past 3 or 4 days....they may have been there longer than that. The color of my BM is also a bit greenish to yellowish which I think is mostly from the high amount of salads. I removed pepper as a seasoning to see if that was the issue. They also seemed to appear about the same time I have been taking B-12 (500) and wonder if there is a link with that. At what point should I get a stool test? I am seeing a GI doc on Monday for the reflux and was diagnosed with LPR by my ENT.

Brief Answer:
No, it doesn't....

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Eating banana does not cause your stool to become black. To my opinion, B-12 is often associated with black specs in stool.

I advise to do fecal occult blood. You can send to me a photo of your stool for better judgment.

Take care!

Ok...sounds good, while gross, I will get a photo for you. It will be easier to see probably on a papr surface as that is how I notice it. I can also refrain from the B-12 and see if it goes away, but I suspect if it just B-12, Its not a problem.

I take B-12 because I am on two doses (20 mg twice daily) of omeperazole (PPI) for acid reflux. The more I think of it, the black specs seemed to start about the same time I started taking the B-12. I did not worry about it the first time they showed up, but the repeated appearance after 3 or 4 days seemed strange.

Ironically, I just got my B12 blood work back today and my results were about 450 which I understand is mid range and the test were taken before I started the suppliment.

Thanks for listening and I will keep this case open until I know more and collect a photo if it appears to be a problem tomorrow.

Thank you!
