Question: can a general dentist give sublingual blood pressure medecine to a patiet immediately before extractions to get his blood pressure down to acceptable levels or must he delay the extractions and seek a referral to the patients physician

Hello,

I disagree with such decisions because a dentist cannot be knowledgeable enough to manage hypertension. Managing hypertension is not just about giving pills when the blood pressure is higher than normal. Several parameters have to be taken into account. For example rapid lowering of blood pressure in certain patients may lead to heart ischemia (inadequate blood and oxygen supply), faintness, syncope, etc. Using sublingual pills is accepted mostly when a patient has an acute condition like angina.
