Can Remeron And Melatonin Be Taken Together?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Mar 2017
Question: Hello, my name is XXXX XXXXXXX and I take 15 mg of abilify in the morning, 5 mg of L-methylfolate two times a day, 1 mg of klonopin three times a day, and 45 mg of remeron at night to help me sleep. The remeron doesn't always work so I was wondering what I could take with the remeron or in place of the remeron to help me sleep. I tried ambien and trazadone and they didn't work. Last night I took 30 mg of remeron at 8 pm, then 15 mg of remeron at 12 pm, and 6 mg of melatonin at 1:30 am, and I threw up in the morning, but I had eaten a bunch of cereal and milk right after I took the melatonin, around 1:45 pm. But it did give me a good 3 to 4 hours of sleep though. So would it be okay to take the melatonin provided that I just don't eat anything when I take it? I also read on google that combining melatonin and remeron can cause death in patients over 60. I'm only 35, but I am still concerned - Is it safe to take remeron and melatonin together? So what do you suggest I do to help me sleep. Take the melatonin with the remeron or take restoril instead of remeron or take it with remeron? 3 mg of melatonin does not work for me, so I have to take 6 mg. Please tell me what you think I should take to help me sleep.

Sorry, I meant 12 am and 1:45 am. I was also wondering if I could just take 200 mg of trazadone.

I have an appointment with my psychiatrist on Tuesday. I was wondering what medications you think are good for sleep that I can ask him about. GHB? Phenibut? Prosom? Midazolam? Valium? Do you think any of these five will help me sleep and won't interact with my other medications or do you know of another sleep medication that is good that won't interact with my other medications?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

It is safe to take Remeron and melatonin together. Melatonin is less effective the higher the dose -- I would actually take 1mg rather than 3mg or 6mg.

Trazodone 200mg is too high, I would not take this dose. This would be dangerous.

You mention 5 medications and ask if they are effective for sleep -- the answer is no to all of them. Most of these listed are benzodiazepines or barbiturates and are addictive and do not result in restful sleep.

I recommend you take a look at two major things -- CBT for insomnia, and quetiapine. The first is a structured therapy that very often works when medications fail. The second is a medication originally developed as a neuroleptic but is used at very low doses for sleep.
