Can Reglan Cause Psychiatric Side Effects?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Mar 2017
Question: I have by test been notified that I have lowered stomach motility but apparently not enough to merit the use of reglan. My GP indicated there are psychiatric side effects of this drug. I'm not sure what he meant. Is this true and to what extent if so?

Brief Answer:
It can cause Tardive dyskinesia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query,
I have gone through your details.

Most likely you are suffering from Gastroparesis. Reglan (Metoclopramide) is the only drug approved to treat Gastroparesis at present. However long term use of this medicine have reported to cause Tardive dyskinesia. Tardive Dyskinesia is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary, rapid movements of the face and body.

Tardive means "delayed,” and dyskinesia means “abnormal movement.” This condition is a serious side effect of taking Metochlorpromide for long term. Tardive dyskinesia typically affects someone’s face, often causing uncontrolled grimaces and movement in the eyes, lips, tongue and jaw. Arms, fingers, toes, legs, hips and torso are also affected and may twitch and move rapidly and uncontrollably. These random body movements can be uncomfortable and painful and difficult to control.Severe cases of this disorder can be debilitating and make it difficult to perform simple tasks like talking, walking and eating.

Hence both pros and cons should be compared before starting the therapy.

I would suggest you drastic life style and dietary changes for one month and if they din't help in that case you can consider taking medicine.

I hope i have answered your query well,In case you have any other question,I would be happy to help you.

Regards.
