Can Nitrofurantoin Be Taken During Pregnancy For UTI?

Question: Hi,

My wife is suffering with Urinary Track Infection. Doctor suggested nitrofurantoin 100 mg thrice a day for 7 days. Is it safe to use in Pregnancy. Thanks in advance.

Hi XXXXXXX I have gone through your question and understand your concern. Nitrofurantoin is category B drug, which means there are no known risks to the fetus till date in various studies done worldwide. It is one of the safest drug for the urinary tract infection in pregnancy.
I would suggest your wife to complete this7 days course of nitrofurantoin and get her urine tests repeated after 1 week of finishing the drug, so that it can be assessed whether the infection has been treated.
In the meantime, she should drink plenty of water and other fluids, as it helps in treating urinary tract infection.
