Can Neosporin Be Used As Lubricant During Intercourse?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Nov 2016
Question: My daughter told me her and her boyfriend used neosporin as a lubricant. Will this harm her? Do I need to take her to her gynecologist or is this an emergency? She is a 20 year old on birth control and there was a condom used.

Brief Answer:
This is not an emergency. There is no need to take her to Gynecologist too.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

Neosporin is a topical antibiotic. It should not be used as lubricant. With its continued use it can change the normal vaginal bacterial flora and cause vaginal infection. So ask your daughter to stop using it. Instead she can use lubricants like Replens, Astroglide etc.
This is not an emergency. There is no need to take her to Gynecologist too.

I hope this is helpful. If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.

Best wishes,
Dr Rama
