Can HPV Remain Undetected For Years?

Question: my wife said she tested positive for hpv, the doctor told her there are no false positives only negitives . we have been married for 32 years and I have not had sex with anyone during that time, and she has never had another partner. I was married before and did have sex with other women before my current wife. First of all can there be a false positive test and can the HPV lay dorment for 32 years?
