Can HCV Be Transmitted Through Breast Milk?

default
Posted on Wed, 31 Dec 2014
Question: Hello,
I'm concerned about possible exposure to hepatitis c or b or a...or hiv.
I shaved my vagina in the morning and had a few cuts down there. I went and visited my friend that night who told me he has symptoms for hepatitis. He is an ex intravenous drug user so I know it really possible. I used his bathroom...that was very dirty..I noticed blood on the floor and lifted the toilet seat up and there was a lot of dried Urine and what looked like dried blood on the toilet seat ...maybe from vomiting blood? I squatted over it and peed but it hit the toilet bowl or rim and sprayed back at me the whole time.
Does peeing on a surface that has possibly dried hep c or b or hiv blood and it spraying back on an area you cut 8 hours earlier pose a risk for transmission at all? I forgot to wipe because I was shocked about the spraying everywhere and cleaned up my legs and toilet...so the urine kinda sat there until it dried.

I'm really nervous because I'm nursing my toddler. I read that hcv doesn't transfer through breast milk..but he sometimes scratches or bites my nipples...and I've picked at them before...those pimple type bumps on your nipples that are supposed to help lubricate for breastfeeding..but thy haven't bled or anything. I'm sorry my question is so long. I'm extra paranoid because I'm nursing my son

Brief Answer:
No risk of any disease to your little one

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
There is no risk of Hepatitis C, B or A and HIV from the above incident. The only possibility is that you can get a urinary infection due to unclean surroundings of the toilet. I would recommend you watch for any burning and pain during urination which might indicate a probable urinary infection.

Your toddler is absolutely safe and I would suggest you to stop thinking about the transmission of sexual disease when you visited your friend. Your concern for the little one is normal and I re assure you that there is no risk to his health.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
Please read through the points mentioned below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

I would like to make the following observations.
1. You never came in to direct contact with possible infected blood or body fluids.
2. The dried urine will not contain any viable infective viral material to transmit disease.
3. The spraying back will usually not cause any direct deposition of bacteria but due to the squatting or touching of toilet seat there is a little chance of urinary infection as while using a public toilet.
4. Not wiping your vagina is not a concern as far the cuts during shaving are concerned.
5. The breast is an organ away from vagina and your son will not be exposed to any harmful bacteria or viruses during nursing considering that you are healthy.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

There were brown spots in addition I dried urine and I'm speculating it could be blood since he told me he was vomiting blood. If I urinated on the dried blood and it sprayed back at my cuts that wouldn't be considered exposure? I'm worried about breastfeeding because hiv and hep b can be transferred this way...and hep c can through him scratching my nipples then breastfeeding

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to deposit HIV or Hepatitis C abd B particles by spraying

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

The dried brown spots are most likely stools which is sticking to toilet bowl. Even if considered dried blood, viruses do not remain active in that state for long. Also spraying cannot deposit viral organisms.

I understand your anxiety and am ready to clear all your doubts. Review of medical literature does not show even a single case of a person getting HIV or Hepatitis C and B that way.

Hope your query is answered.
