Question: Cardiologists I have a slow heart rate when resting the lowest I've seen was 42 beats per minute I've also had 2 ECOs and 2 stress tests done in the past and literally more than 50 EKGs as a result of panic disorder and I also had a heart monitor on me for 24 hours. Now my question is I still suffer from anxiety and I'm taking clonidine 0.1 in the am and now 0.1 at night I've been taking clonidine in the morning for a month and at night for just one day and it was okay. should I worry about clonidine making my heart go to slow ?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that clonidine is not related to low heart rate. This is not an adverse effect of clonidine. Its main action is on blood pressure.

Anyway, considering all your performed tests, I would conclude that there is nothing to worry about.

You should know that a lot of persons have a low heart rate like yours, especially those who are very active (people who perform a lot of physical activity or sports).

So, as all your cardiac tests have resulted normal, there is no reason to worry about.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

I read on the internet that it works by slowing your heart rate and bringing your BP down. that's why I was so worried about it. So the final answer is I shouldn't worry about it then correct ? please answer and I'll close the thread and rate you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that the main action of clonidine is in the central nervous system, thus leading to decreased vascular resistance and blood pressure.

By acting in the central nervous system, it also helps regulate the function of that area of the brain responsible for attentions, emotions, and behaviors and causes reduced hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsiveness and also modulate the pain transmission.

It can slightly lower heart rate, but not at this levels.

Besides, as all your performed cardiac tests are normal, there is nothing to be afraid of.

So, just relax and don't worry about it!

Nothing bad is going on with you!

Hope to have clarified some of your uncertainties!

Wishing all the best,

Dr. Iliri
