Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: just got my results back from my company health fair and my hematocrit number was 41.6. one year ago it was 42.3 and two years ago it was 43.1. I feel fine but don't eat as healthy as I should. I'm 57 and in good health overall. I'm wondering if I should start taking a centrum silver or some other type multi vitamin?

Brief Answer:
You can if you like

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I am Dr Mittal. I have read your query. I think I would be able to help you. The fact remains that the hematocrit is a measure of the hemoglobin. That and the PCV actually suggest the hemoglobin levels. I don't have the access to the full report but I think the hemoglobin is probably good. So if that's the reason why you want to take multivitamin, think again cause your hemoglobin is already good.

However, the multivitamins are unlikely to cause any damage. So if you want to take them there is harm in doing so. In fact the micronutrients that are available in most tablets may actually make you feel better.

If you can upload the test reports ,I think I would be able to help you find a better solution. I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.

Brief Answer:
watch cholesterol

Detailed Answer:
The reports look normal. Cholesterol levels are also normal, however, the levels are at the upper border of normal. I think I would suggest that you start exercising regularly and watch your diet carefully.
Multivitamins can be used but I doubt they will be too useful.
