Bitten By A Dog. Given Anti Tetanus Shot And Antibiotic. Should I Be Worried About Rabies?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Oct 2012
Question: Hi, I was bitten by a strangers pet dog here in Singapore last friday, Sept 28 2012. the wound is healed now but im quite worried with the rabies. They all say that Singapore is a rabies free country and i don't have to worry about it. I was only given anti tetanus shot and antibiotic. Do you think my worries are pointless and just put it to rest?

Hi,

Thanks for your question. You have been bitten by a pet dog (as most pet dogs are vaccinated it is relatively risk free). Since your country is rabies free, there is nothing to worry. Singapore is an island country and some diseases cannot spread beyond waters. Rabies is one.
The treatment you received is right.
I checked from the W.H.O.list of rabies free countries, Singapore is a rabies free country.
Always remember that any bite including human bite, the area should be washed thoroughly under free flowing water for 5 minutes with soap.
Hope I answered your question.

What will happen if i was not able to wash the bite immediately but was treated and cleaned by the clinic nurse after 20 minutes?

Hello thanks for follow up

I appreciate you concern of rabies but your wound was properly washed and treated by nurse. A delay of 20 minutes is of not much importance. Your wound should be healed now. It was a pet dog ( pet dogs vaccinated) and your country is rabies free.

I am happy that you are coming with some useful queries that can help others when you speak to them.

Relax and think of something productive rather than of small things like rabies.

Do write me back if you have some other query, I will be happy to reply. Hope I replied your query to your satisfaction. If you don't have any more query, close the discussion, accept the answer and review it.

Regards
