Posted on Fri, 17 Jun 2016
Question: I have 2 month old baby .. My brother in law when he see him he give him food to lick one time he gave him chocolate.. Today he gave him tea .. Im so concerened because i know babies are not allowed to eat anything that is not milk.. I also read that their enzyms are not yet compelete to digest any kind of food other than milk which sometimes can cause them also problems and vomit .. Can u plz tell me the medical view of why babies under 4 months shouldnt lick food specialy thing has caffiene like chocolate and tea .. I need straight forward medical and scientific reasons because i tried to let him stop he told me baby should be introduced to food to not be picky when he grow up like u.. Next time i will be realy angry and take my baby away but i neeed prof a very strong proof to let him know how small his brain is.. Although he is a father of 2 ..and he is at end of 40's

Brief Answer:
Avoid anything except breastfeeds or formula feeds

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I completely agree with you and appreciate your concerns. Do not worry. You may strongly object to the unnecessary introduction of any foods, drinks, and chocolates based on the following facts:
- Babies should be offered only exclusive breastfeeding or formula feeds in the first 6 months of life. This is important as the digestive system and renal system are too immature to handle any food products which we adults can very easily tolerate. Even licking is prohibited to avoid any infections.
- caffeinated products can lead to several side effects even in small quantities such as stomach upsets, colics, irritability, excess urination leading to dehydration etc. So avoid it.
- start introducing complementary feeds which includes all your staple diet after 6 months when baby is mature enough to tolerate and also the taste buds are developing.

Hopefully it will be of help.
Take care
