Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: My dentist has recommended that I take 500 mgs each of amoxicillin and metronidazole in preparation for a deep cleaning. I am 75 years old and have a history of chronic diarrhea which is now under control. I am very nervous about reigniting that.

Brief Answer:
This cannot reignite it!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this worry on your mind. This is a one time dose and cannot cause any potential problems. Diarrhea related to antibiotics happen when they are used for long periods and not a single dose. It may also XXXXXXX you that metronidazole is the first drug to use in diarrhea related to antibiotics and as such you shouldn’t be too worried. Furthermore, this is very good to protect the heart. So please, the advantages outweighs any potential diarrhea related risk, which is almost inexistent here.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.

Actually he wants me to take the mess for a couple of weeks. Does that change your opinion?

Brief Answer:
It certainly does but amoxicillin is not too brought but why that?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this precision.

I suggest you ask him why you need to take it for a couple of weeks in preparation for deep cleaning only. Is there something he’s not told you about this procedure? Please ask and request for justifications why you have to be on it this long. However, amoxicillin is not often the primary culprit in inducing diarrhea. The main drugs to keep away from are ampicillin and Clindamycin in this case. The risk is very minimal given the duration of several weeks but still minimal because of the choice of antibiotic.

I wish you well and let me know what you think.
