Are Elevated PSA Levels Signs Of Prostate Cancer?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Mar 2016
Question: My husbands psa went from 2.7 to 16.8 in five weeks. I'm concerned that this is indicative of aggressive prostate cancer.
He has no noticeable symptoms. Nurse practicioner thought she felt a nodule on DRE. Only action was to repeat PSA - which is the second reading.

Brief Answer:
PSA is a marker for prostate cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.

As an Urologist, i can fully understand and share your concern.

Your husband will need the following tests to be done :

1. Get examined by an Urologist, who'll perform an examination, including DRE.

2. urine routine and culture test.

3. blood routine, creatinine, sugar, LFT, platelets, BT,CT and PT.

4. ultrasound of abdomen-KUB, with TRUS( trans rectal ultrasound scan ).

After seeing theese reports, a good idea of the diagnosis can be made out.

If a malignant nodule is felt on DRE, and/or a suspicious lesion on TRUS of prostate is seen, ultrasound guided needle biopsy, will need to be done.
The biopsy will confirm the diagnosis.

You're welcome to clear any doubts, along with the reports of tests mentioned.

Wishing your husband good health.

Brief Answer:
several causes other than cancer for elevated PSA.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Yes, there're several causes for PSA to go up,like :
1.Prostatitis
2.Large prostate gland
3.Following prostate gland manipulation, such as instrumentation or digital massage.
4. cancer prostate.

This is the reason, why an Urologist should do the DRE examination and
his scan should be done.
Hope you're clear of all your doubts.

Wishing him well.
