What Is The Red,itchy And Foul Smelling Areas In The Popliteal Fossa?

Hello,

I have red, itchy, combination of dry/wet, foul smelling areas in the popliteal fossa bilaterally. I am larger person so a perfect area for a yeast infection. I have been using anti-fungal powder twice a day behind both knees for a weak. It's dried out a big, no more smell, but it is still red and itchy. At what point do I seek something prescription strength?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that you might be having fungal infection.
Management includes:
1. Keeping the area dry & avoid too much exposure to water or sweat formation.
2. Antihistamine preparations like cetirizine to reduce the itching sensation & provide symptomatic relief.
3. Application of topical antifungal cream like Clotrimazole to tackle the causative organism.
4. Topical steroids & antibiotics can also be used to prevent secondary bacterial infection.

If symptoms still persist or aggravate further, then it will be better to consult a Dermatologist & get a proper examination done to find out the actual cause.
So that appropriate management steps could be taken.

Also avoid wearing tight clothes...as it will cause sweating & predispose to fungal infections.
Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
