What Does Sharp Lower Abdominal Pain In Pregnancy Indicate?

I will be 20 weeks pregnant Monday. This is my first child. I have be experiencing sharp pains in my lower abdomen for the last couple of days. When I have this pain it gets worse when I sneeze, cough, or laugh. This pain does not last. I have also been experiencing a dull ache in my stomach. I have notice that some days my stomach is hard and other days it is soft. Is this normal during pregnancy?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

All pregnant women experience some degree of abdominal pain during their pregnancy. But to make sure this is purely due to pregnancy and not due to any other causes, I would recommend a physical examination and ultrasound follow up.

Once these two examinations have reported no abnormalities, a hormone level checked might be warranted; any abnormalities observed have to be corrected. If all is well, there is nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
