What Causes Fever With Pain In Neck On The Right Side?

I have had low grade fever for last 25 days with pain in the neck on right side for almost 15 days. Then it came on the left side. The entire left side of the neck above collar bone and also the area below the jaw pains. Sometimes the pain is so much that even the throat bones ( adam's apple ) also pains. Pain subsides in the mornings and comes back by evening and remains till midnight. It comes with fever of 99 - 99.8. Ear also pains and jaw as well. I have been treated by an MD doctor ( my family physician ) who thought it was a viral and treated me with pain killers and antipyretic and now when swelling has come back on left side, he has given me antibiotic zipod 200 mg BD. My sos titre came back negative, but my ESR is raised (36). Other blood parameters are within range like complete CBC, KFT, LFTs, Urine etc. I had also gone to an ENT specialist who took a deeper look into my throat and he said that I could possibly have left TMJ syndrome. I am confused. Even today pain came back and I checked, I had body temp of 98.9 and I took antipyretic. My antibiotics have been given for 7 days and its 4th day today. Pl advise.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi. To me this looks to be due to swelling of the cartilages in the said area. This occurs in many patients after viral infection as your Doctor has suspected. This is because the cartilages have a scanty blood supply. Although the exact reason for this is not known, patients do get benefit after a short course of steroids like deflazacort , which your Doctor can prescribe.
