What Causes Dizziness, Blackouts, Fatigue And Disturbed Sleep After Discontinuing Nexito?

I have been on Nexito 10 mg for last two years(Recommended by My pschiatrist for mild depression). Now that I have been trying to taper down to 5 mg and finally stopped taking for last 2-3 weeks. I am geeting strange symptoms like dizziness, frequent blackout for few seconds, lessened energy and disturbed sleep. Could you please suggest, how long does it take to get over the withdrawal symptoms please. Thanks in advance

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Nexito is Escitalopram and the drug belongs to SSRI group of anti-depressants. The drug acts by causing change at receptor levels, so when individuals stop taking the drug they suffer withdrawal symptoms because of increased receptor firing. You have reduced the doses from 10 to 5 and then after 2-3 weeks stopped completely. Usually in my OPD I advise patients to taper the doses over 6-8 weeks to prevent withdrawal symptoms. You are having mild dizziness, blackouts, reduced energy and poor sleep and as per my opinion such symptoms will last for about 2-3 more weeks and then will reduce by own. Low doses of clonazepam or other benzodiazepines can help to reduce the symptoms. If symptoms are intolerable consult a psychiatrist for prescription of Clonazepam.

Thanks, Take care

Dear
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns

I went through your details. First of all I would like to know whether you tapered your medicine with the consent of your psychiatrist? If yes then you need to talk to your psychiatrist and re-start the high dose. If no, you are not supposed to do so. The present symptoms do not seem to be withdrawal symptoms. Your anxiety disorder is yet to be cured. Please consult your psychiatrist and tell him the whole story.

If you still need my assistance in this regard, please use this link. http://goo.gl/aYW2pR. Please remember to describe the whole problem with full detail.

Hope this answers your query. Available for further clarifications.
Good luck.
