Swollen Foot And Ankle. Moving Indentation. What Could It Be?

My right foot and ankle has been swelling for a few weeks now and the other night I noticed an indention or sunken in place above the ankle, later it was gone and another reappeared a little above from where the first one was. The next morning, that one was gone and a few hours later I had another one appear on the inside of my leg again above the ankle and since it has moved to the right upper side of my foot. I have no clue what it could be or what kind of doctor I need to go to about it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The swelling in the foot & ankle can be attributed to edema (fluid accumulation).
Indentation indicates that it is a pitting type edema.
Common causes are:
1. Deep vein thrombosis
2. Hypothyroidism (early stage)
3. Early stage of lymphatic filariasis
4. Allergic reactions
5. Venous insufficiency
6. Lymphatic blockage due to other reasons

So, kindly consult your Physician & get a proper clinical examination done.
Investigations like complete blood count, Doppler scan of the right leg, Thyroid scan will be helpful.

There is no need to worry, you will be fine.
