Should I Be Concerned For Bit Brown Stools, Chills, Tingling In Hands After Taking Golytely For Constipation?

My husband just finished taking the jug of GoLytely because he had been severely constipated ( X-rays revealed that he was full of fecal matter). The first two movements were a bit brown but all clear after that. He has been experiencing chills and hands are tingling. Should we be concerned?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your husband taking Golytely for severe constipation and getting chills and tingling of hands after passing stool and clear movements. It seems that he developed electrolyte imbalance and may be dehydration and hypothermia.

I would advise him the following in such a situation: Give electrolyte solution if available at home. Take to Er so that clinical evaluation and lab for blood tests can be done, particularly for electrolytes, calcium and so on.

The treatment will be given as per the findings. There is nothing much to worry but it is better to take a precaution to avoid any complications. Keep him in warm ambiance. Give warm fluids.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
