Severe Snoring, Stops Breathing While Sleeping, Vomiting, Breathlessness. How To Prevent This?

My husband is 35 years old, 5 ft 11 inches and 210-215 lbs He has always had a bad snoring problem, and sometimes stops breathing in his sleep. On some nights, he wakes up choking on vomit , and unable to breath. He has to do a sort of Heimlich manover on himself to release the vomit, so he can gasp for air. Is this life threatening, and is there something i can do to help prevent it from happening again?

Hello,

Thanks for posting this question in HCM

Let me tell you that a given medical problem can be due to various causes like yours. I understand that your husband has snoring, obesity and chocking spells. All these symptoms are strongly sugestive of obstructive sleep apnea. What i mean the airway is getiing collapsed during sleep and these can give rise to the chocking episodes. When partially collapsed these will result in snoring.

You will benefit with the following

1. the chocking episodes are called as apnoic spells. The best way to get the diagnosis is to do a polysomnography in a sleep lab, to be done and reported by a sleep medicine specialist. This test will tell the degree of problem

2. In addition you need to be investigated for opbesity. This can be due to thyroid problem and heart problem also need to be excluded in these patients.

3. Another possibility of chocking spells could be some opbstruction in airway and i advise you to go for ENT evaluation too.

Once ENT evalution, cardiac check up come as normal and the dianosis if obstructive sleep apnea is establised, we have to go for another setting of sleep study to undrestand the erxternal pressure required to prevent the iaiway colapse. This is called PAP-Titration. This will guide us regarding the exact machine that your husbad has to use for treatment of chocking spells.

You need to have good diet plan, regular excerices too
Obstructive apnea can ber serious and a advise you to meet a sleep specialist immediately

Hope this will help you
