Severe Cough, Mucus, Chest Burns, Lost Voice. What Could Be Wrong?
I lost my voice two days ago today is the third. I only cough in the middle of the night and during the day I am fine but my voice will not come back. When I cough at night it is so bad I get up run to the bathroom and spit up lots of mucus when I cough it feels like my chest is on fire and hurts really bad. What could be wrong with me?
Hi ! The late night cough could be due to a spasmodic/allergic cough which precipitates whenever you are in the sleeping (supine ) position. Also during night time, the secretions of upper respiratory tract gets deposited in the throat and so it gives rise to cough and expectoration of the deposited mucus. If you are having burning sensation in the chest, it could be due to regurgitation of the gastric acid during night when you lie supine causing the cough as well. The voice problem signifies that you have laryngitis as part of your problem. You can go for some cough syrup along with a decongestant for some time and also simple steam inhalation at least three times a day. This may relieve your problems. If it continues, then you may have to show yourself to an ENT specialist for further check ups and investigations. Wishing you an early recovery.
