Pain In The Ear, Headache. Is It Due To Long Exposure To Headphones? Chances Of Hearing Impairment?
hi I am a medical transcriptionist for more than 10 years. After an extended shift work or when I need to rewind and listen poor sound quality dictations, I feel ear ache and fullness in my ears. It is like swelling inside my ears with teeth also hurting. I will sometimes get severe headache too. This will continue for the whole day. It often resolves after a good night sleep with cotton in my ears or taking pain pills . what should I do, will this cause hearing impairment .
Hello dear...
The presence of headache, ear ache, fullness in ears & other symptoms may be associated with the prolonged use of headphones, as your profession demands.
These symptoms if not taken care of in the initial stages can lead to hearing impairment by causing permanent damage to the hair cells in the inner ear.
Investigations like Audiometry, Speech Interference tests, Tympanometry will be helpful in detecting the extent of damage.
Depending upon which, proper management steps could be taken.
So...it will be better to consult an ENT specialist to the earliest & discuss about the preventive as well as management strategies.
Wishing you a good health.
Thanks & take care.
