Itching In Throat And Scalp Is Due To Reaction Of Medicine For Low Blood Pressure Or By Eating Peanut Butter?

My daughter has been taking a fludrocortisone for the last 2 weeks due to low blood pressure. She is al so swimming for the HS team and has been eating peanut butter quite regularly for the last month. Last night, within 20 minutes of eating a peanut butter blizzard, she started to itch around her throat and on her scalp. She also had a few hives. We gave her Benadryl after this happened. She awoke this morning and felt fine. Before swim practice she ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and the symptoms came back again along with a swollen lip. I am trying to figure out if this reaction is due to the medication or the peanut butter. Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thanks for the query,
It is important to get a proper clinical review. It is certainly true that an allergic reaction to something, which needs to be identified should be done. A complete blood count for Esoniphil levels and measurement of immunoglobulin E levels could help in proving an allergy. A complete physical exam by an ENT specialist and review to identify any possible allergen is necessary.
