What Causes Heart Palpitations After Having Food?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: Doctor,my question is very odd. There were 5 situations over 15 years, when I had palpitation after having food from a host.Only once it was prolonged and painful. At this juncture I did have a friend of mine who is a sr cardiologist who could see me.At 59 my health is reasonabl good,if not perfect.
I live in a very hostile environment.my question is what could be the substances when deliberately put up in food items like rice, curry or fruit shake that could induce palpitation?May you be kind enough to enlighten me. Regards. XXXX.

Brief Answer:
Food items & palpitation

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Excessive coffee, tea can cause palpitation .
A food additive called monosodium glutamate (MSG) is often blamed for Chinese restaurant syndrome, a group of symptoms that some people experience after eating food from a Chinese restaurant. Severe symptoms may include:chest pain, rapid or abnormal heartbeat.
Datura toxins may be ingested accidentally by consumption of honey produced by several wasp species, including Brachygastra lecheguana, during the Datura blooming season.
All Datura plants contain tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine, primarily in their seeds and flowers. Because of the presence of these substances, Datura has been used for centuries in some cultures as a poison.
Due to the potent combination of anticholinergic substances it contains, Datura intoxication can cause various symptoms incuding tachycardia.

Brief Answer:
Episodic palpitations

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You are most welcome.Kindly let me know if any further clarification is needed. However I would suggest you to undergo complete cardiology evaluation including ECG,Stress test & 2D-Echocardiography, as it seems you have not been able to pin point any food item causing your episodic palpitations.
