What Are The Symptoms Of Rheumatic Fever?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 May 2015
Question: I am a 53year old woman with several health issues. I had rheumatic fever, and always suffered with strep throat and conjunctivitis when I was a preteen. At age 19 after the birth of my first child I was diagnosed with asthma. Throughout the years it has been a constant battle with my weight. I had gastric bypass surgery. I regained 40 of the 80lbs I lost. Then had a second weight loss surgery (lap band) which was a success for the year following, now I have regained the weight . I have polycystic ovarian cysts, copd, sleep apnea and several vitamin deficiencies. I have been to several specialists about my condition but it seems to be frustrating the Dr's not been able to find out exactly what my diagnosis is. My present complaint(going on 1 year now) is major muscle pain, cramps and spasms.
It started out with flu like symptoms in April 2014. I went to my internist and was given the usual meds to treat the flu- z-pak antibiotics and cough meds. I was severely weak and Ill for 1 week. The following week I went back to work and was taken back with exhaustion, muscle cramps and spasm throughout my body and copd. Whenever I exercise or over exert myself I get extremely winded, muscle cramps spasms, hot and cold spells, feeling like I am swelling, hand and feet turn red and I feel like I am having an anxiety attack. What are your thoughts on this? Can you explain.?

Brief Answer:
Could be one of two possibilities.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
I think there are two possibilities here.
It could be perimenopausal or menopausal changes, - you have not mentioned your menstrual status.
The second possibility here is a neuro muscular disorder.
You need the following workup -
Hormonal levels ( FSH, LH, Serum estradiol ) and pelvic ultrasound scan to confirm if you are menopausal.
Workup with a Neurologist and Orthopedic Specialist to know about any possible nerve / muscle disorder.
All the best
