Suggest Treatment For Cyst In Ovary

Question: While recently hospitalized for an unrelated matter, CT scan found and ultrasound confirmed a 2cm x 1.5cm cyst with septations on my left ovary. I'm 37. I've lost 60 pounds this past year unexplained other than I'm eating less because I'm satisfied by less when I eat. I had seen an internal med doctor 6 months ago due to the weight loss, but we didn't find anything, although we didn't know about this. I've had left lower quadrant pain and I've had suddenly irregular periods for the past 4 months. My right tube is gone from a prior ectopic pregnancy. I dismissed the irregular periods, despite being on the Nuvaring due to a recent head injury. My doctor can't get me in until November 4th. Mother had a full hysterectomy in her late 30's due to polyps and cysts. Is this waiting too long?

Brief Answer:
A benign cyst likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
A cyst of the size that you have described is likely to be a benign cyst. It can be a functional cyst or a small hemorrhagic cyst of the ovary also. The chances of having a malignant cyst are rare.
Such a small cyst is not likely to cause the weight loss. You have no family history of ovarian malignancies. Still to relieve your anxiety you can get your serum CA-125 levels evaluated after consulting your gynecologist. This is a sensitive marker for any ovarian malignancy. In case the levels are within normal limits then there is nothing to worry and you can wait for your appointment scheduled on Novemeber 4th.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

I have blood work scheduled by my internal medicine doctor for my other conditions this Friday. Would that be a test that they can order so that we can have the results by the time I meet with my gynecologist?

I do not know if my mother's cysts were benign or malignant. I know that her hysterectomy was completed due to the cysts. My mother never followed up with her gynecologist for her post op appointment and she does not engage in any routine medical care.

Brief Answer:
He can order the test.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Your internal medicine doctor can order the test and you can have the results by your next appointment with the gynecologist. Even if there is a positive family history such small cysts are rarely malignant.
Hope my answer is helpful.
Do accept my answer in case there are no further queries.
