Question
Hi, I am 22 years old living in Canada (Toronto) and I wanted to know what is a good pill/med for ED (Erectile Dysfunction) symptoms that I sometimes face. Other than Viagra, what is a healthy pill that I could use for my age?

Hello,
Thanks for your query.

I appreciate your efforts for medical consultation in so much distress.

Viagra is one of the most advanced treatment for ED. If you are not improving with this, then there is need to find out cause for ED, to treat it.

Erectile dysfunction can be a result of a psychological or physical problem.

Psychological causes: Most common cause in young patients. These include performance anxiety, emotional weakness, inferiority complex, stress, marital or relationship problems, low mood, feelings of guilt, and the effects of a past sexual and emotional trauma. Men with psychological problem usually have normal nocturnal erections and erections upon awakening, whereas men with physical problem often do not.

Physical causes: Include neurological disorders, alcoholism, drug abuse, hormonal imbalances, diabetes, hypertension, blood vessel disease and chronic diseases.

What I can understand from your query is that you are not able to sustain hard erection which is required for intercourse. You are 22 years of age and at this age, any difficulty in getting or maintain an erection is due to psychological reasons in most of the cases. I hope you are not taking any alcohol or smoking as sometimes these can also cause erectile dysfunction.

I will describe some simple measures which you can incorporate and these should help you:
-First of all, quit smoking and alcohol (if you are taking any)
-Stop worrying excessively.
-Eat a healthy diet: fruits, milk and eggs
-Have faith in yourself and do not take any stress. You can talk to your partner openly and indulge in plenty of foreplay before sex. As you will worry, your problem will increase further. You can also plan to some short vacation for honeymoon, which will relieve your stress.
-Exercise, particularly aerobic exercise (like: Jogging, skipping and cycling) daily. It will increase blood flow all over body and will reduce stress.
-The commonly prescribed drug for ED by the doctors is sildenafil (Viagra) or Tadalafil (Megalis), which causes erections to be stronger and long lasting, but should be taken after prescription. It is important to rule out medical conditions specially related to cardiovascular system before starting such treatment. Both of these medicines have excellent result in physical causes of erectile dysfunction. But if psychological factors are affecting erection, then this medicine is less helpful.

There is also need to rule out certain medical conditions which can affect erection. These include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or thyroid conditions, poor circulation, penile venous incompetency and neurological causes. For that comprehensive evaluation and tests, help of other specialist may also needed.

Apart from that in person evaluation and examination by psychiatrist may be necessary in your case to identify and treat psychological cause of ED, specially sexual/performance anxiety.

I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you. In case of any doubt, I will be available for follow ups.

Wish you good health.

Thanks a lot for your response Doctor. I do believe it is mainly psychological as you have suggested. In terms of specific pills for my age to help getting me erect right away, what can I take other than Viagra (since I am young because of my age)?

I was looking at a product called PHGH but that is a daily supplement that will help in the long run. What is a less serious drug with less side effects than Viagra that I can take with my age and have the instant erection. Is there a list of
Drugs that you can suggest/compare? Will I need a prescription for them or can I order them online? It won't be a permanent solution or something I will always do, however it would definitely give me the confidence I need right away and help me in the long run by following your advice with the list of things I need to do. Thanks a lot

Hello again,
Thanks for follow up.

Specific and commonly used drug for erection is Viagra only. However while on searching on net you will find many product sold as natural, herbal and safe product.

Do not use them without physician advice, as many of these product contain steroids or stimulants which can be harmful for health.

ED is one of the common and difficult problem to treat. There is no short cut for treatment as erection affected by several medical conditions. In unresponsive cases detailed evaluation is needed to find out cause of the problem (listed in primary reply). Then, final treatment depend on the cause of the problem.

Psychological problem suspected after ruling out medical causes of ED and detailed history. If psychological problem present, then following steps are useful:
-Sex education and sex therapy sessions
-Specific pharmacological and psychotherapy treatment of psychological problem.

Apart from that follow other steps, as mentioned in primary reply for long term benefit.

Wish you good health.
