This is most often caused due to cervical spondylosis. However if it is acute and accompanied by fever or vomiting, then the possibility of meningitis should be considered. Please have a physical examination and a cervical spine xray.

Thanks for your query. The most common cause is abnormal posture, wheter due to issues with the mattress, or degree of elevation of the pillows; one simple trick that even worked for me for such problem is to sleep without a pillow so that your neck is in a 90 degree neutral position; if you think abaout it when we are awake we get a stiff neck if we keep the same position for long. Hi, If all you have is a stiff neck, then I will recommend some pain medications like Ibuprofen and Tylenol. However, if other symptoms like fever, headache and sensitivity to light are present, I will suggest that you seek medical consultation as this may represent a more concerning condition. The most common cause of neck pain and stiffness if bad body posture. Make sure this is not the case.
