Varying Stools, Lactose Intolerant

Hi my 10 month old grandson go from a very large constipated pale poop to a runny pale poop all the time, he strains and turns red either way. He is lactose intolerant, on lactose free milk,and eats everything that we eat and sometime baby food too,what could be causing his poop to go from hard one day and runny the next
