Would Lack Of Intake Of Folic Acid Medication Affect The Fetus?

Hi doctor, Am 6 weeks pregnant now and i have not taken any folic acid suppliments yet . Am scared that wether my baby will have any birth defects. Last day I had bleeding with some clots ,did testes, seems that babies heart rate is 103 . Theres no family history of any birth defects. since i have not taken any folic acid suppliments is it sure that my baby will have some defects?? Thank you, Amrutha

Dear Amrutha,
thanks for approaching.Folic acid supplement is a must for every pregnant woman.Recommended Folic acid dosage is 400mcg/day.You also need to take Iron supplements at 60mg/day to counter anemia.I suggest you to start them immediately.Make sue to get a USG scan done for Nuchal Translucency at 10-12 weeks of pregnancy to rule out any chromosomal abnormalities is baby.There is a TRIPLE TEST to be done in second trimester to rule out other birth abnormalities .Hope this clarifies.wish you a healthy baby
