Will Using The Heater Cause Discoloration On The Skin?

Is it possible for a small space heater to cause mottled skin around my ankles? The discoloration occurs on the right side of each ankle, the same side I keep the heater on. It doesn t hurt and is not uncomfortable at all. Just looks terrible. I have sustained no injuries. It came on suddenly and has persisted since March (although I ve used a heater under my desk for 2 years). Sometimes it s worse than usual. The color ranges from rust to purple and varies day by day. Discoloration is in a spidered, vein-like pattern. The space heater is the only thing that would remotely explain why it appears on the inside of my left ankle and outside of my right ankle. I have heard that heat can cause mottled skin. Is the heater I use in the office my issue? And will it fade? Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your case history, you are having erythema ab igne (EAI) also known as hot water bottle rash. My treatment advice is –

1. Don't scratch the lesion as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on the affected region.
3. Take a vitamin c supplement

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harshit Bhachech
